It’s rare to meet someone who throws themselves so passionately into everything that they do, and Maria DeCotiis is one of those rare gems. Born and raised in Vancouver, Maria knows the ins and outs of the city, as well as the trend cycles unique to modern west coast interior design.
Maria was always interested in both fashion an interior design. She began studying design at BCIT, but something told her to first follow her fashion interests, “I kind of fought with the fashion side of me because I’d always been really interested in it, so I did it, and then I realized I was really missing design, so I went back to school.”
Maria’s style can be described as classic, with an edge – adding something into her designs that modernizes the home’s aesthetic. “My clients understand that my end goal is to create a beautiful space for them, and they trust me and have a lot of faith in what I’m providing,” she says. “They’re always willing to do something a little bit different, too.”
I don’t do things just to get the job done, and I would never sell something to someone that I didn’t think was perfect, or beautiful or that I don’t believe in.
What’s most important to her is that trust is established between her and the client from the very beginning, “I honestly think it’s my excitement [that gains that trust],” she says. “I take it very personally and I care about it so much, and clients can see that – I don’t do things just to get the job done, and I would never sell something to someone that I didn’t think was perfect, or beautiful or that I don’t believe in.”
Maria’s passion for her work is nearly tangible. The thought of starting a project from scratch and seeing it through to the end is thrilling for her. While she loves working on spec homes (homes that are made to sell), her favourite projects are client-facing, where she has some creative freedom to collaborate and bring a vision to life.
In order to bring originality into every home she designs, Maria gathers inspiration from everything in her life, “I feel very inspired when I travel, or even in the city, exploring new restaurants and new spaces.”
With her eye for design and curated taste, Maria’s ability for turning a house into a home is truly unique and unmatched.
